Documents a nominee or legal heir is commonly asked for. A missing document alone is not a reason to reject a life claim.
A general checklist does not replace your policy wording or the list your insurer gives you for your claim. Ask the insurer what it needs in your case.
| Document | What it is for | When it may be needed | Differs by insurer? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claim form | The insurer's death claim form. | Always | Yes, can differ |
| Death certificate from the local authority | Proof of death. | Always | Usually the same |
| Policy document | Identifies the policy. | If available; the claim can go ahead without it | Yes, can differ |
| Claimant's identity and address proof | Confirms who receives the money. | Always | Usually the same |
| Claimant's bank details | For the payment. | Always | Usually the same |
| Medical records and hospital certificate | Cause of death, if it was due to illness. | When the insurer asks, often for recent policies | Yes, can differ |
| Police report and post-mortem report | Cause of death in an accident. | Accidental or unnatural death | Yes, can differ |
| Proof of legal heirship | Shows who is entitled when there is no valid nominee. | No nominee, or the nominee has died | Yes, can differ |
