A lost policy document does not end the cover. The insurer holds the policy record and can issue a duplicate or an electronic copy, and claims can be made with the policy number or the insured person's details.

Who this guide is for
- Policyholders who have lost their papers
- Families who do not know the details of a relative's policy
Step by step
- Look for the policy number in emails, bank statements or premium receipts.
- Contact the insurer through its official customer service and ask for a duplicate or e-copy.
- If you are a family member, ask the insurers the person may have used; life insurers also show unclaimed amounts on their websites.
- For a claim, inform the insurer even without the document and follow its instructions.
Documents commonly asked for
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Any record of the policy: number, premium receipts, bank statements or emails | Helps the insurer find the policy. |
| Identity proof of the policyholder or claimant | Needed for a duplicate or a claim. |
| Request letter or form for a duplicate policy | Some insurers ask for an indemnity bond or declaration. |
The insurer may ask for fewer or other documents depending on the case.
Common mistakes
- Delaying a claim until the original papers are found
- Sharing policy details with unknown callers who offer to "recover" money
What the rules say
- No life insurance claim is to be rejected or closed only for want of documents or because it was reported late. [1]
