Frequently asked questions

What is a PIN code?

A PIN (Postal Index Number) code is the six-digit number India Post uses to sort mail. The first digit stands for a postal region, the first two for a sub-region or circle, the first three for a sorting district, and the last three for the delivery post office.

What is the difference between a delivery and a non-delivery post office?

A delivery office sends postmen out with mail for its area. A non-delivery office offers counter services such as post, money orders and savings, but mail for its area is delivered by another office. Each office page shows which kind it is when the data says so.

Where does this PIN code information come from?

From data.gov.in, recorded as an official source. Details: data version v2026.10.10-2, last checked on October 9, 2026 and effective from October 10, 2026. Open the source. Post offices open, close and change, so confirm anything important with your post office.

How can I find the PIN code of another place?

Type a village, town, post office or the first digits of a PIN code in the search box on the PIN code search page. Hindi and English names both work; add the tehsil or district to tell places with the same name apart.
