Home insurance can cover the building, its contents or both against perils the policy lists, such as fire, storm, flood, earthquake and burglary. Owners usually insure the structure; tenants can insure their belongings.
IRDAI introduced a standard home policy, Bharat Griha Raksha, in 2021, with the same basic wording at every insurer. Since June 2022 insurers may also offer their own alternative products alongside it.
