How the balance is worked out

Each year: balance = (last year's balance + deposit) × (1 + rate)

The calculator assumes one deposit at the start of each financial year (on or before 5 April) and interest added once a year at the same rate for every year. In the scheme interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance after the 5th and added at the end of the year, so deposits made later or in instalments earn less than shown.

The government sets the PPF rate every quarter. The rate you enter is your assumption; if you leave it empty, a current rate is used only when a verified official rate is recorded on Finobazaar, and the result says which. Finobazaar does not run the scheme; your post office or bank keeps the account.

This is an illustration from the rate you assume. It is not an offer, a forecast or investment advice, and it does not promise any return. The bank, post office or fund's own terms decide the actual amount.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula does the PPF calculator use?

Each year: balance = (balance + deposit) × (1 + rate)
The explanation below the calculator sets out each step and what the result leaves out.

What details do I need for the PPF calculator?

You need: deposit each financial year. Optional: interest rate.

Are these returns guaranteed?

No. The result uses the rate you assume and keeps it the same for the whole period. Market-linked returns change from year to year, and banks, post offices and funds apply their own rates and terms. Finobazaar does not fill in a product's rate unless a verified official rate is recorded, and then says so.
