Plot area calculator

Last updated

Work out the area of a plot from its measured sides. Split an irregular plot into simple sections — rectangles, triangles, trapeziums — and add them up, or take away a cut-out. Every step of the calculation is shown.

Section 1

Rectangle (length × width)

Triangle (three sides)

Triangle (base and height)

Trapezium (two parallel sides and the distance between them)

Four-sided plot (four sides and one diagonal)

How the area is worked out

  • Rectangle: length × width.
  • Triangle from three sides: Heron's formula, √(s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)) with s = half the perimeter. The sides must be able to form a triangle.
  • Triangle from base and height: base × height ÷ 2, the height measured at right angles to the base.
  • Trapezium: (sum of the two parallel sides) ÷ 2 × the distance between them.
  • Four-sided plot: four sides alone do not fix the area, so one diagonal is needed. The plot is split along it into two triangles, each worked out with Heron's formula.
